There are thirty-three chief deities mentioned in our ancient Hindu scriptures. These deities have been worshipped and prayed to in our country for ages.
These dieties are as follows:
- The Adityas: The twelve sons of Aditi are known as the Adityas. They are called Dhattri, Mitra (the Sun god), Aryaman, Sakra, Varuna, Ansa, Vaga, Vivaswat, Usha, Savitri, Tashtri, and Vishnu.
- The Rudras: The eleven Rudras were born of Sthanu. Sthanu, by description and reference, seems to be Mahakal himself. In the Sauptika parva, Lord Krishna told the Pandavas that it was Mahadev who had entered Ashwatthama. With his power Ashwatthama had become so powerful that he killed all the warriors in the Pandava camp. He narrated the story of Lord Shiva in which Mahakal was referred by the name of âSthanuâ. The eleven Rudras are Mrigavayadha, Sarpa, Niriti, Ajaikapat, Ahivradhna, Pinaki, Dahana, Iswara, Kapali, Sthanu, Bharga.
- The Vasus: The sons of Prajapati and grandsons of Manu were called Vasus and were named Dhara, Dhruva, Soma, Aha, Anila, Anala, Pratyusha, and Prabhasa(Dyau).
- The Ashwins:Â The celestial twins.
