The Art of Self-Control

What skill would you like to learn?

While I appreciate growth for my personal development and career progress, I feel there are certain things we need to learn that help in spiritual progress and in developing a pure conscience.

For those who don’t know me, I have done many things in life. I am an engineer, a researcher, an artist, a writer, and I have even worked in retention marketing.

I have explored academics, research, freelancing, and regular jobs. What I have realized over time is that after every achievement and milestone in life, we still often feel as if something is missing. There is always a gap in those short-lived peaks of success.

Whenever I pause between jobs or projects and spend some time alone, I realize that everything is worth it only if it does not compromise my peace of mind.

I have never stuck to one single path for too long. So I obviously can’t say that I am very accomplished! I have seen people around me who are immensely successful, more successful than me. Yet many of them remain caught up in worries and struggles.

This is an important truth about life. When we are chasing something, we often forget why we are chasing it. Money is important, no doubt. Career is important as well. But if my health is not good, if I am mentally unsettled, or if nothing is working out in my personal life, then how will I find happiness in money alone?

The lesson I am working on right now is learning to adapt and accept that everything cannot be under my control. People around me will not always behave as I expect, and situations will not always unfold as I wish. Sometimes, even if things bother me, I need to let go. I need to make peace with my surroundings and with my circumstances.

This skill may not help me make money but it will surely help me find some peace in my life ❤️
